After Marlins Manager Edwin Rodriguez quit over the weekend in the middle of the team’s sweep by the Rays in Tampa, fans in Miami were left with mixed emotions. They were relieved that a change was on the way. After Rodriguez, who had managed the Marlins to a season-close just 2 games behind the Phillies went on to crash and burn, as they went on to a 1-18 stretch in their last 19 games.
So it wasn’t a surprise that Edwin Rodriguez “resigned.” And though Marlins fans were OK with a change, it was still totally up in the air. This was really more of a left over problem from last season when the Marlins fired Fredi González, and he went on to manage the Braves after legendary skipper, Bobby Cox, retired. BTW – the Braves are currently 2nd in the NL East, just 5 games behind the Phills with a winning record.
But anyway, the Marlins will be announcing today that former Marlins world-series skipper, Jack McKeon, will be joining the team again as its new and not-so-new manager. For those who don’t recall Jack McKeon, let us refresh your memory. He was the manager in 2003 when he managed the team to a world series. Jack McKeon retired 2 seasons later in 2005 at 74. But to put it simply, Jack McKeon has managed nearly 2,000 games, and is now 80-years-old, which makes him the 2nd oldest manager in baseball history, only behind Connie Mack.
But the truth is, Marlins fans love Jack McKeon, and so does the management. Even though they can’t seem to get along with anyone; including, Joe Girardi who was fired in 2006 after he was named the Manager of the Year and went on to join the New York Yankees and win a World Series. But all we can say about the whole thing is, let’s play ball damn it! So what if Jack McKeon is 80-Years old. He’s been to the big game.
